May 2007
The song says "Majesty, Worship His Majesty.
Unto Jesus be all Glory, Power and Praise". But just exactly what is Majesty? Our word Majesty comes from the Latin, it means greatness. When we ascribe majesty to someone we are acknowledging their greatness.
Psalm 145:5 "They will speak of the glorious splendor of your Majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works."
Psalm 93:1 "The Lord reigns, He is robed in Majesty; the Lord is robed in Majesty and is armed with strength. The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved."
When we declare God to be Majestic we worship Him for His greatness, His beauty and for His powerful displays toward mankind. Reflect with me on three aspects of God’s Majesty:
In Creation
The awesome, creative, sustaining power of God. We look at the vast starry hosts and see the Majestic finger of God. The beauty of God is displayed in the majestic bald eagle as it soars above the tree tops, or in the elegant giraffe as it glades along the ground. One summer, Mitch, Jason and I stood on the top of Mt. St. Helens. We saw Mt. Rainier, Mt. Adams and Mt. Hood. We saw the parking lot below as a tiny patch of insignificant real estate. We looked in the mouth of the crater that had been blown away. We were looking at the majesty of God.
In Mankind
The human body is an amazing thing. It can repair itself after being damaged. It breathes without being told. Its sensations are alternately exhilarating and deeply sorrowing. It is complex. Yet so simple and economical in its operation. Like a fine Swiss watch it runs, our only cause for concern is when it breaks down. The rest of the time we take it for granted.
The body is awesome, but so is the creativity of mankind from the engineers of the Pyramids to the stately Statue of Liberty, God has created mankind with an amazingly creative and ingenious mind. Walk around some time in an art show and take in, not only the beautiful display, but the creative genius behind them. Where did that come from? A hunk of flesh? Or did it have its origins in the Majesty of God?
In Redemption
How Majestic was Christ on the cross? From the standpoint of outer beauty it would not qualify as Majestic. But, from the standpoint of inner redemption and reconciliation with God it is grand. To have peace with God, to be content whatever circumstances we're in, to have the joy of the Lord, is Majestic. All this comes through redemption. How Majestic is Your name in all the earth.
Too many people don't see God in this way at all. The God they see is too small to be Majestic. It's time we remove from our thoughts that make God small. We need to let God be God. We need to learn to see His greatness and Majesty! It's all around us.
